what to write in a holiday card

Most people take the easy way out and simply sign their names into a prewritten holiday card. But in an age of impersonal texts and widely broadcast Facebook updates, why not take the time to pen a meaningful handwritten note to friends and family?

Short on ideas? Don’t worry. At PAPYRUS we sort of consider ourselves experts when it comes to expressing holiday sentiments. Here are some tips for what to write in a holiday card.

  • Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
  • Holiday greetings and best wishes for a new year!
  • Sending love and warm wishes to you and your family this holiday season.
  • Wishing you peace and joy to your family this Hanukkah.
  • May your Christmas be merry and bright!
  • Here’s hoping you’re in good spirits this holiday season!
  • Cheers to a new year!
  • Peace, love, and light to you and yours this season.
  • All the best for a joyful season.

Handwrite the above sentiments and then add a line or two about how you’re doing and any interesting pieces of information you think the recipient might want to know. End the note with warm wishes—”love,” “blessings,” or “best” … you know the drill.

Mind Your Manners with Your Holiday Greetings

Here are our top holiday card etiquette do’s (and a few don’ts).

  1. If you’re uncertain as to the faith of the recipient, choose neutral greetings. You can’t go wrong with Season’s Greetings, Wishing You Joy, or Happy Holidays.
  2. Holiday card recipients love a good family newsletter. However, refrain from sending something quite so personal to acquaintances or coworkers. Save your printer ink for family and friends interested in what you’ve been up to for the past year. Same goes for personal photos of your family.
  3. Send your cards in a timely fashion. If you’re mailing out Christmas cards, try to get them in the mail by mid-December, so plan ahead. Don’t think you’ll be in time? Why not send New Year cards instead?
  4. Make sure you add a return address on the envelope.
